British makeup artist Wayne Goss has gained a huge following on YouTube sharing his makeup application tips and tricks, with a channel that now boasts 4 million followers. He also has his own makeup range and brush and tool ranges.
Goss says choosing the wrong products, or applying them incorrectly can give the impression our skin is older than it really is.
“The majority of us will be using makeup to help improve how we look, or even help cover up some of the wrinkles we’ve gained over the years,” says Goss.
“However, due to some mistakes, the makeup we’re wearing could actually be doing the opposite effect, and could potentially be adding not just one or two, but up to ten years to our face.”
Avoid metallic eyeshadow
Goss says shimmery metallic eyeshadow doesn’t always do our eyes justice, particularly on older skin.
“Avoid metallic eyeshadows and instead, opt for a matte finish,” he says. “Matte generally works best as it doesn’t draw attention to wrinkled areas or creases.
He tips to choose powder eyeshadow over cream, as it is easier to apply. “It is easier to blend with a good quality brush. Never blend eyeshadow with a finger. Good quality makeup brushes are made with the intention to blend well with hooded eyelids and fine lines.”
The type of concealer
Using the wrong shade of concealer means makeup will look obvious. The expert says it is worth taking the extra time to find a perfect match.
“Generally speaking, people may go too light around the eyes with their concealer which can add years to your face, so its really important to get the colour that suits your skin tone,” says Goss.
He likes a cream concealer over a very liquid one. “I’d highly recommend applying some on the inner corner of your eye, as that’s the one part of the eye that doesn’t crease.”
Don’t forget to moisturise
The importance of adding lasting hydration to the face can’t be understated, says the makeup artist.
“As we get older, our skin will naturally become drier, which is why hydrating ingredients are so important as you get into your older age,” he says.
He suggests looking for skincare and makeup with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid when you’re on your next shopping trip, to ensure that your products are keeping your skin hydrated.
On older skin a thick moisturiser can help our complexions hold onto moisture that helps plump out fine lines and create healthy-looking skin .
“Before you start applying anything to your face, ensure that you’ve applied a heavy moisturiser to ensure your skin stays hydrated,” says Goss.
Use a primer
A makeup primer is another essential reveals Goss. It will help create a smoother canvas for makeup and help colour have something to to hold on to, for saying power.
“Use a good primer before you start applying your makeup to ensure it’ll act as a barrier between your skin and your makeup to help the makeup stay in the right places all day, rather than just in the fine lines,” he explains.
